With approaching Halloween I decided to make famous Jack-o'-lantern. Yesterday I went to the local market place and bought a lovely, small sized pumpkin. Today I started carving process and I am pretty pleased with the result.

On the website of tesco I found a step by step instruction, which helped me in carving my Jack.
And now few words about Jack's legend.
Jack was getting chased by some villagers from whom he had stolen, when he met the Devil, who claimed it was time for him to die. However, the thief stalled his death by tempting the Devil with a chance to bedevil the church-going villagers chasing him. Jack told the Devil to turn into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods. Later, when the coin/Devil disappeared, the Christian villagers would fight over who had stolen it. The Devil agreed to this plan. He turned himself into a silver coin and jumped into Jack's wallet, only to find himself next to a cross Jack had also picked up in the village. Jack had closed the wallet tight, and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers; and so he was trapped.
In this legend Jack only lets the Devil go when he agrees never to take his soul. After a while the thief died, as all living things do. Of course, his life had been too sinful for Jack to go to heaven; however, the Devil had promised not to take his soul, and so he was barred from hell as well. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he had no light, and the Devil mockingly tossed him an ember that would never burn out from the flames of hell. Jack carved out one of his turnips, put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or Jack-o'-Lantern.

I don't know how much truth is in the legend about Jack, however I find the carved lantern to be a nice Autumn style decoration for the house.

W związku ze zbliżającym się Halloween postanowiłam zabrać się za dynię i zrobić słynnego Jack-o'-lantern. Wczoraj na bazarku zakupiłam niezbyt dużą, aczkolwiek bardzo urodziwą dynię i dziś zabrałam się do pracy.Z pomocą przyszła mi instrukcja zamieszczona na stronie tesco. Przynajmniej nie musiałam za wiele kombinować i z sukcesem udało mi się owy lampion stworzyć. Stąd możesz pobrać szablony: gwiazda i buzia.
A teraz kilka słów na temat legendy związanej z Jack'iem.
Nazwa Jack-o'-lantern wywodzi się od mężczyzny o imieniu Jack, który za życia wykorzystywał każdą okazję na wzbogacanie się. Pewnego dnia Jack spotkał diabła, który zaproponował mu bogactwo za duszę. Niedługo przed dniem Halloween przybył do niego diabeł, aby zabrać jego duszę. Jednakże mężczyźnie podstępem udało się uwięzić demona. Skąpiec umarł jednak 31 października. Jack nie mógł wstąpić do niebios, ponieważ był chciwy, ale nie mógł także wstąpić do piekła, bo żartował z diabła. W zamian zmuszony był chodzić z latarnią po ziemi aż do dnia sądu ostatecznego.
Czy tak było nie wiem... niemniej jednak dyniowy lampion wydaje mi się całkiem sympatyczny i z przyjemnością ozdobię nim nasz dom.
Dla zainteresowanych załączam instrukcję oraz poniżej zdjęcia z mojej zabawy z dynią/ DIY instruction:
1. Prepare a stencil depicting a face, attach it to the pumpkin with pins. / Przygotowany szablon przypinamy pinezkami do dyni.
2. Using a needle, pin or a toothpick make a trace which will help you in cutting the shape of the eyes, nose and spooky lip / Za pomocą igły, pinezki lub wykałaczki nakłuwamy dynię wzdłuż szablonu. W ten sposób uzyskamy wzór gotowy do wycinania.
3. First step is to cut the top to open the pumpkin and then scoop out the inside flesh. / W pierwszej kolejności wycinamy górę, tak by powstał otwór, który umożliwi nam wydrążenie dyni.
4. Sections of the pumpkin are cut out to make holes, often depicting a face, which may be either cheerful, scary, or comical. / Wycinamy wszystkie elementy po kolei. Po ukończeniu tej żmudnej pracy możemy cieszyć się własnoręcznie wykonanym lampionem.
